Vaccine & Gene Therapy Institute of Florida

Funding & Operations

In 2008, VGTI-FL was created from a $60 million grant from the State of Florida Innovation Incentive Fund. Additional matching contributions from the City of Port St. Lucie and St. Lucie County were invested in infrastructure such as roads and utilities to allow the construction of the research facility at the Tradition Center for Innovation.  The City of Port St. Lucie then supported a bond offering in 2010 by VGTI-FL of $50 million to fund the construction of a nearly 100,000 sq ft. facility adjacent to the Torrey Pines Institute for Molecular Studies and the new medical campus of Martin Health Systems.

VGTI-FL is a stand-alone non-profit research institution and a 501(c)(3) corporation.  Continued funding and support for the research at VGTI-FL comes mainly from granting agencies such as the National Institutes of Health and foundations such as the Gates Foundation.  VGTI-FL currently has over $10 million in grant support to fund the research endeavors currently underway at the institute.  However, while these funds go to directly support the research activities at VGTI-FL they cannot be used to fund public outreach and educational activities sponsored by VGTI-FL.  Many of the activities that VGTI-FL is engaged in will require the generous support of donors and foundations from concerned citizens or corporate partners.
